Analyses of Impaired Driving Issues

SCRI conducts studies in the following areas: Age and Driving, Alcohol Impairment, Alcohol Measurement and Detection, Cognitive Aging, Cultural Differences in Drinking and Drinking and Driving, Driving Under the Influence of Drugs, Fitness-for-Duty Testing, and Standardized Field Sobriety Tests, among others.

Driving Assessment

SCRI has developed a comprehensive battery of tests aimed at assessing the driving skills of individuals who may be at risk of having their driving privileges suspended or revoked for functional limitations due to illness or aging.  Individuals who have lost their privileges and would like an objective evaluation of their driving skills are also candidates for this assessment.

Referrals and self-referrals are welcome. The evaluation requires approximately 6-8 hours, and it includes the following:

· Neuropsychological testing

· On-the-road driving (if requested)

· Simulated driving

· Useful field of view

· Vision and hearing tests.

A report summarizes the client’s performance and compares it to the appropriate normative data.  A face-to-face meeting with the client allows discussions about the results of the assessment.

An individualized training program is then developed to reduce and possibly eliminate the functional limitations evidenced by the assessment. During the training program, the clients have access to SCRI staff and equipment six days a week for 1, 2, or 3 hours per day, depending on the type of training required.

Laboratory Study of Prescription and Over-The-Counter Drugs

SCRI conducts experiments to examine drug effects on human performance.  SCRI supports pharmaceutical companies in the conceptualization, design, data collection, data analysis, and report preparation of their labeling studies.  Pharmaceutical companies are strongly encouraged to assess the effects on human performance of their investigational drugs, with and without alcohol, while conducting Phase III or Phase IV of their clinical trials.

SCRI assesses the acute and chronic effects of investigational drugs on a variety of sensory, perceptual, and cognitive dimensions, including driving and work-related tasks. The findings directly address critical issues of patient safety as they engage in daily activities, facilitate the language of labeling and package inserts, and possibly limit the liabilities associated with contraindicated use and adverse consequences.

SCRI welcomes inquiries about its methodology, staff, facility, and apparatus from Clinical Research Coordinators and other interested parties.
